The 2016 PPE Giveaway Recap and Reminder

Aftermath’s 2016 PPE Giveaway wraps up this week, so we’re taking a quick look back on the contest, it’s benefits, and our overall effort to raise awareness about the dangers of bloodborne pathogens. Almost 1200 entries have been received thus far, coming from sheriffs departments, police officers, and other law enforcement agencies all across the US. If you have not yet had a chance, you have until Thursday night to fill out the simple entry form. Full rules and other details are located here. The contest ends 3/31/16 and the winners will be announced by April 11th, 2016.

Beyond the objective of protecting those who serve our communities, Aftermath also strives to educate professionals on the importance and proper use of personal protection. There are many types of PPE, each suited to specific jobs, from fighting fires, to dealing with hazardous chemicals or, in the case of crime scene cleaners and many others, ensuring safety around bloodborne pathogens and other biohazards.

The Importance of PPE

Aftermath technicians are not only skilled at the use of PPE because of nature of their work; they also endeavor to pass that information on to the families they serve, as well as to police, insurance adjusters, and other professionals who may be at risk of coming into contact with dangerous pathogens. According to OSHA, “Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. Workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses.”

In the past 4 years, Aftermath has given away hundreds of PPE kits to police and other first responders throughout the country. Because of it’s disposable nature, numerous departments have told Aftermath that PPE is something they truly need; many winners report that they put their kits in their cruisers, so that they are ready for any biohazard situation. One winner stated that he had to use his kit almost immediately after receiving it – jokingly, he said he didn’t even have time to enjoy the prize before he needed it!
